Process

The site of memory Les Corts Women’s Prison Monument was conceived as an open and dynamic public space in a collective and participatory process that started in 2009 and was inaugurated ten years after. It is an open process that is born and is nourished by citizen participation and that, therefore, like every living society, is continually in progress.

Socialising Memory and History

In November 2006, the association ACMe (Associació per la Cultura i la Memòria de Catalunya / Associtation for the Culture and Memory of Catalonia) launched a multimedia portal about Les Corts prison for women, in the form of a virtual “site of memory”.

A plaque that conceals and reveals

A plaque unveiled in October 2010 by Les Corts district councillors turned out to be, in a funny way, a catalyst to kick-start a collective process.

A Laboratory of Ideas

In 2011 the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona promoted a series of initiatives towards the creation of a public space and the erection of a monument on the area that occupied the site of the former prison and encouraged an open debate, so that local organisations and social groups of the district could join in and provide their feedback.

‘The Invisible Prison’ Project

Once the website was up and running, ACMe went on to organise several cultural initiatives to make the history of the prison known to the residents of the district and the city, in cooperation with the Association of Local Residents and other entities.

The Prisoner's Voices

Right after the celebration of the 8th of March 2015 (International Women’s Day), and the commemoration of the 14th of April (anniversary of the proclamation of the 2nd Republic), the presentation of the exhibits at the temporary site of memory of Les Corts prison was re-arranged to give prominence to the voices of the women that lived there.
